A silly and quickly made gif of Quinton XD, the Dark Souls character of one of my favorite LPer’s on Youtube, Steve aka 666theheartless666~ (You may recall I did another fan gif for this LPer last year!)

His Dark Souls LP has got to be my favorite LP he’s done I look forward to every new part with a HUGE amount of enthusiasm! I love his frustration with the game and I love his relationship with Quintion XD, the character who is essentially a parody of Leon from Resident Evil 4. I’ve had this gif idea in mind for a while, I ended up making it simpler than I planned to if only because I came to the realization that my animation skills just aren’t that wonderful. (Maybe I’ll try my hand at animation again if I decide to animate Quinton’s BALLERINA SPIN?)

Been listening to Random Access Memories by Daft Punk. It put me into a Weird Art Mood, sorry ‘bout that.

Trying to encompass ideas of ‘artificiality’ and its relationship with insecurity, incompleteness, and lack of free thought.

Who is this dashing, stern-eyed fellow in the military outfit and captain’s hat, you might ask? (Prepare for a long-winded answer!)

This here is kind of a re-imagining I had of the notorious (if not INFAMOUS by this point) Adam Malkovich, Samus’s old commanding officer, from the Metroid series.



I tried to give him both a look and character that, while staying true to the Metroid series (at least in regards to Metroid Fusion), also gave him a more interesting and far less condescending dynamic with Samus.

While I have no doubt in my mind that the Adam Malkovich of Metroid: Other M was how the character was always intended to be, at least in Yoshio Sakamoto’s mind’s eye, I can honestly say from personal experience that Metroid: Fusion built him up to be something very different. The Adam Malkovich of Metroid Fusion (Samus’s computer AI given to her by the Federation based on the ‘real’ Adam Malkovich) has a lot more personality than the sack of bricks that was presented to us in Metroid: Other M. He’s classy and calculating, yet snarky and even sometimes snippy with Samus, and at the end of the game you even see that the moralistic and caring personality of Adam Malkovich even manages to override the Federation’s forced obedient programming of the AI.



The way Samus mentions him in her monologues throughout Fusion even implies that Adam was a very inspirational character in her military career, and his upstanding morals regarding the field of combat meshed well with the Chozo’s teachings of peace and teamwork over violent conflict. While the writing in Fusion implied that Adam and Samus’s relationship could have gone either way in terms of a close friendship versus a detached teacher-student relationship, Other M couldn’t seem to find any middle ground.

Other M turned Samus’s admiration for Adam into something almost like a lustful pining, and emotionally she held a great deal of feelings for her Commanding Officer that were… completely uncharacteristic and almost disturbing. (Keep in mind she was supposed to view him as a FATHER figure??) Adam’s behavior towards her, in turn, was cold and completely uncaring if not outright insulting during the entire course of the game, with the exception of one very out of place flashback cutscene where he seemed worried for her (though Samus herself NEVER sees this scene of him acting worried, and it’s a short two second scene only there for the sake of viewers). And of course there was this bullshit cutscene where Adam deliberately put her in grave danger, unnecessary emotional stress, and complete and utter indignation. (More or less the exact opposite of what fans assumed to be Adam’s moment of saving Samus’s life which was mentioned in Metroid Fusion.)

But disregarding Adam’s awful characterization in Metroid: Other M and going back to Metroid: Fusion, while Fusion implied that Samus had a great deal of admiration for her CO, like I said there was no specific indication that they had a close relationship outside of being part of a specialized squad.

I went off of this angle instead, where Samus’s relationship with Adam was of a student learning from a teacher. Completely cutting out the idea that she needed Adam as a father figure in her life (if we are to assume that her adoption by the Chozo race is canon which, by Metroid Prime’s standards, IT IS), Samus instead views Adam as an inspirational leader and warrior.

To this degree, Adam’s personality changes from cold-hearted to passionate. While serious in some aspects, he is capable of very playful and good-natured behavior, and is skilled in inspiring morale in those who are under his command. His age is now upped significantly to about 45 to 50 by the time Samus meets him to show that he is both experienced and wise.

His “dashing” looks and the dynamic he has with Samus is heavily inspired by Captain Avatar and Avatar’s relationship with Derek Wildstar from Star Blazers, one that is both respectful and professional while at the same time evoking the sense of a fond friendship. Mentor to student.

Adam’s design and even a couple of other character traits are also inspired by Admiral Dane from Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (my favorite Metroid game if you haven’t gathered that yet.)



As far as his impact on Samus’s life and career in the military and as a bounty hunter, I have a few headcanony ideas of my own, but I’ll be brief with this and just say that I believe he was most likely responsible for her maturation. The hardness and calm attitude required for bounty hunter work probably came from him, as it’s been implied and seen in places such as the Metroid Manga that before she joined the military, she was incredibly rebellious and hotheaded. At the same time, his passion for living creatures and for peace (seen in Metroid Fusion) probably also rang true with her, and was just one other source of many (such as her life with the Chozo and her own painful past) for her undying mission to protect innocent lives in the galaxy.

I also feel that despite her admiration of her CO, Samus doesn’t belittle her own good deeds for the galaxy and perhaps even views herself as having surpassed “the master.”

I apologize for this long-winded post, I tend to get really passionate about Metroid, especially when Other M gets thrown into the mix, but I hope you found this interesting! Thank you for reading!

So browsing my ‘art folder’ I’ve come to the realization that I have a lot of artwork that I’ve doodled and just haven’t posted on this blog, despite it being a doodle blog in nature. There’s quite a bit in here, actually, that I’ve never really posted, so starting now I’m going to start posting older works or doodles mixed with newer ones. I’ll mark what’s old and what’s new, of course!

The goal is to hopefully regularly post just any old stuff that i end up saving, and actually getting some nice work in progresses or cute doodles in here as well as completed pieces.

Cosplays I did at Katsucon 2013!

Friday night I briefly cosplayed Yosuke and went to the Persona photoshoot at midnight. They gave me a cupcake with Mara on it, it’s precious and it was delicious (and blue)!

On Saturday I did Terezi’s FLARP outfit! I’m really proud with how that one came out and I’m hoping to do it again soon.

Hopefully I’ll be able to find more pictures of both of these costumes in full, these were taken by my friend just for the sake of showing other buds~
